Strictly speaking, copying your friends DVDs would be illegal if they are copyrighted.
If you bought a DVD of a movie and were making a copy for your own personal use that could be legal ...

there is some dubiety over whether it is legal to copy DVDs for your own use,
 making copyrighted DVDs available in the public realm is against the law.

Although, I would never condone your doing anything such as copying a DVD without appropriate permission (  [:P] ) I can tell you that there are plenty of free DVD rippers available - this one, for instance.

But remember - DON'T BE A PIRATE!  [::)]

Hmmm..... Methinks perchance you could be getting an answer to your query from 'emilyy' or 'serwan'.

Not according to RIAA, any copying, for whatever reason is illegal. Unless you have permission, that is.

RealNetworks touts 'legal' DVD-to-PC copying; movie industry says not so fast
By Paul McNamara on Sun, 09/07/2008 - 11:45pm.

When RealNetworks debuts new DVD-to-PC copying software Monday morning at DEMOfall 08, one major selling point will be that users can sleep soundly knowing for the first time that their homemade copies of commercial movies are perfectly legal.

Is it legal to save movies with RealDVD?

Yes, provided that you are the owner of the original DVD and you use your saved copy solely for your personal use.

Maybe. (Update, Sept. 30: The legal battle begins.)

There used to be a couple of fair-use caveats to copying copyrighted works for your own use that were first established when cassette recorders became popular i.e. for back-up purposes (to prevent loss through damage or deterioration of the original media) and to allow you to use the work privately in other places i.e. in your car.  I believe these were established in courts of law.  See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_Use

Although note that this article is mostly from a USAsian point of view and the legislation, if any, is different around the world.
