Does gravity exposure cause ageing?
« on: 15/04/2009 14:30:02 »
Linda asked the Naked Scientists:

Apparently, the closer you live to the earth's gravitional pull the older you get.  If you were born on earth and then lived beyond the gravitional pull how old (if ever) would you be?

What do you think?

I think it's the other way round. Gravity causes time dilation: the stronger the gravitational field the slower time passes.

Being in micro-gravity could make you appear younger as it would give a slight face-lift, and make facial wrinkles less by puffiness.

You may be referring to the so-called twin paradox, where a twin who travels on a high-speed spaceflight ages slower than his twin on Earth. This is due to the acceleration the travelling twin has experienced, not his distance from (and the lessened effect of) Earth's gravity.
