Has Earth's gravity changed recently?
« on: 05/06/2009 08:30:02 »
noel eastwod asked the Naked Scientists:

Is it possible that gravity has changed?

If we were once the same as the moon is now wouldn't this answer a few questions ?

(1) Dinosours could have easly been able to hold up there bulk
(2) the pyramids bricks would have felt as heavy as polystyrene... is our way of measuring gravity not accurate because what we measure with  with also getting heavier?

Please help me with this as is is driving me crazy..

thanks, noel

For the gravity to increase wouldn't that mean that the Earth's mass has also increased?

You said that you havn't gained any weight so it must be a no.  I said that the amount of wieght would have to be a bit more than what one person could put on.

If gravity has increased, I would get heavier, which I haven't.

Oh, that's what you meant.  I thought that you were saying that you havn't put on weight, therefore making the mass of the Earth increase (which wouldn't work anyway because the weight you had put on would have come from somewhere else on the Earth, maaking no overall difference).

If gravity had changed it would have affected the Moons orbit etc. Since the ancient astronomers kept quite good records of the moon etc. we know that gravity hasn't changed.

Sorry to Lazarus a thread, but I had to respond to this one.  An expanding Earth is actually championed by these guys newbielink:http://www.expanding-earth.org/ [nonactive].  It's all pseudoscience obviously, but if you like science fiction it is a good read.

If I ever become a millionaire I want to fund a debate between those guys and these guys newbielink:http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/ [nonactive].  I would be like watching an extra 21st chromosome slap fight!

Well I don't know how to break this to you but... the moons orbit has changed.

    Yes, it's moving further away.

But I think Bored chemist already knew that.

if the gravitational constant of the universe ( Earth is in the universe, after all ) were to change, the results would be catastrophic.  I'm not going to get into it, you're smart enough to do your own research
