Which is why your copilot's original statement would merit a fail.

Pity you couldn't be bothered to work it out for yourself, as any "semi-expert" (e.g. first-solo pilot) would be expected to.

Anyway, before you kill yourself with arrogance (it's the greatest danger in flying) I'll just add that ρ also depends on humidity, and both lift and thrust depend on ρ. If you work through the lift and thrust equations you will see that entirely normal variations in T,P and H even at sea level can make the difference between a safe departure and an encounter with the trees.

Aviation is full of "wise saws and modern instances". One often quoted is

"Things that will not save your life: runway behind you, altitude above you, fuel in the bowser, and anything that has already happened." To which I will now add "and the books you haven't read."
All very wise and wonderful, I am sure. However, I am concerned on Naked Scientists re aviation only with the Dreamliner crash.

About which your obsession with conspiracy and fuel temperature has been bolstered by a chatbot. A glance at a photograph of a 787 cockpit, and a few words reported from the CVR, told everyone else what happened.

Yet ""everyone else" doesn't seem to include the investigative team in your clever clogs world!

Investigative teams are not paid to rush to conclusions, but if the copilot asked "why did you cut the fuel", it would be foolish to assume that the pilot had not operated at least one of the manual fuel cuts which were accessible to him.

I'm not sure of the single-engine performance of a loaded 787 but you can't get over-water certification for a twin if it won't at least fly level on one engine once it has reached V2 at MTOM within the operating envelope.

Yawn. Discussed ad nauseum.

No, An excellent exposition of the known facts by Alan. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing and mxplxxx has demonstrated the operation of this adage comprehensively.

Re Gen Z and high tech.

There is hope yet for the world. Gen Z are embracing old-style responses to high-tech. See https://copilot.microsoft.com/shares/dePibqgaeziVAgptyovAx

They still use smartphones for essentials like maps and music, often with app blockers.
Not for essentials, I hope! When did music become essential (it's banned in Afghanistan)?

Interesting case this week when the EU President's plane was subject to Russian blocking of GPS signals and the pilots reverted to paper approach charts. The Powers That Be still insist that the legal document is the paper chart, so we always carry one. It's very satisfying when your electronics go blank and you arrive on time by map, magnetic compass, and mechanical stopwatch!

Excessive reliance on computers to perform an ever increasing list of functions will result in catastrophe, sooner or later. Yours sincerely, luddite supreme.

I always carry $100 in notes. Not only are they pretty, but they are also indispensable for when pinpads are inoperable at my local supermarket. I also have three phones (IOS, NOKIA, Android), 2 PCs (Windows 11) and 1 NUC (Intel Core 7 Windows 10). A spare bedroom full of food and water and flood/heat provisions. I am well aware of human's propensity for creating stuff that breaks down and stuffs up the environment.

I have a 4k Ultra 32 in LG monitor and a 4k 50 in Smart TV with inbuilt Streaming and WIFI plus Beyonwiz and Telstra PVRs. I have 500 mbps fibre to the house broadband and cable.

I am subscribed to Copilot and ChatGPT AIs.

Oh, and I have a Cochlear implant (which means I AM a Bluetooth device and can listen to pop music in church).

I am a screaming technophile but always have backup. Gen Z are very wise when it comes to technology. They embrace the best of both Digitial and Analog.

Finally something we both can agree upon!! I always carry a similar float of cash in addition to cards and I also keep a healthy stash of cash at home.

I keep a few dollars, roubles and euros, because you never know what's going to go wrong next. I have  no confidence in the security or future interoperability of various old laptops and phones, but I do know that whilst you can run out of bullets (essentially digital), a good knife (pure analog) always works.

But here's an idea: I've been told to avoid contactless rechargers and MRI magnets because they can screw up my pacemaker. So I have a painless, non-messy and fully controllable means of suicide.

Very wise precautions.

Cash is king. I also have a massive stash of coins going back 50 years.

All we need now is the address of mxplxxx. If there is enough cash located there to cover a return flight down under and a reasonable excess it will be well worth doing(joking, of course!!).

The excess baggage will be a problem but fortunately most banks will exchange coins (even outdated ones) for credit which you can transfer back to the OId Sod by the magic of computers!
