Is it safe to sleep with mosquito repellant devices switched on?

Karina van Twisk asked the Naked Scientists:
Hello guys!
I have a question about mosquitoes, they are getting on my nerves lately, since they have decided to invade our home outdoors and indoors.
It's terrible at night, do not let us sleep with their constant noise and if any part of our bodies is out of the blankets we wake up with big bumps and itchiness.
I got a plug in repellent device which works for 10 hours and then needs to be replaced. But is this safe to keep on while sleeping?
My question is how do these repellent work and are they any harmful for our health?
Thanks so much
Karina van Twisk
