The file sharing site Drop.io is pulling the plug on December 15th 2010.

After that date all the data they have stored will be deleted.
So if you need to keep files stored by Drop.io, (including those via the Drop.io links I have posted in this forum),
download them ASAP.

Shows how ephemeral anything stored online can be, you are at the mercy of the site you use.

Moral is, make at least 3 copies - one on your harddrive, one on an external medium not stored by the computer and one or more on-line. That way you are very likely to have a backup that is usable. Remember that a single copy of something is just as permanent as a sandcastle at low tide.

I bought one of those little NAS (Network Attached Storage) boxes. It's running RAID 1 and it's in the garage where it's nice and cool. I've finally managed to persuade Mrs G that it's worth the hassle of putting all her files, photos etc on the NAS. She was using two different PCs and she could never remember where she had saved anything!

EDIT: BTW, don't assume you'll be able to read files you thought you archived on to CD-R discs. As the dye degrades and the metalic coating oxidizes, they can become unreadable after a few years.
