Why does my body react differently when sunbathing?

I love sunbathing and can tolerate the sun comfortably for half an hour or so with no ill effects, but if I fall asleep in the sun for ten minutes I wake up drenched in sweat. Why does my body react differently under the latter conditions and why don't I sweat so much when awake?
