Indeed, time itself began with the big bang singularity. There's no time without space and no space without time. The big bang wasn't just the origin of space, but also the origin of time.As well as there's no space to continue back through the big bang, there's neither time.
In my opinion and I am not a scientist, time does not exist and never did

You should note the Big Bang theory is a theory and not absolute proof. killtec - The theory states that before the big bang nothing existed, not even time itself or space. Obviously there is not 100% proof of this , but this is the most accepted model although I personally would contest it and do not ''buy'' into the logic in any sense. In my opinion and I am not a scientist, time does not exist and never did , so in answer to your question did time exist before the big bang ? My answer is no, but also I do not think it exists after the ''big bang '' either. Neither do I personally believe that there was no space before the ''big bang'' on the premise that for any event to happen including a ''big bang'', it would need an existing space to happen in.

why does the Universe need a thing called time?
The better question would be did energy exist before the big bang? If the answer you give is yes then you will have zero point energy which will have a wave function that varies. How can this vary without time?
Because without the passage of time, the Universe would not have evolved to it's present state. The Universe needs the passage of time for it to evolve.
In my opinion time did exist before the Big Bang the Big Band being just the beginning of our universe not the beginning of existence, because existence is eternal, while the universe is finite it had a begging and entropy will make sure it has an end.Alan
