I have installed a fix that limits the length of signatures to 80 pixels, I think this makes the threads a bit easier to read. What do people think? Is this a good idea? Should I make the limit shorter or longer?

You may want to edit your signatures to make them look better with the new format.

If it wasn't clear, that is 80px high not wide, which I think is probably enough...

It certainly may save me having to put blocks on some of the larger graphics used in signatures (the adblock addon in FireFox is great for removing unwanted graphics, like large signatures - but I'd just as soon have the problem fixed at source).

Incidentally, how does the 80px limit work out when font sizes are scaled up - is it better to calculate in point sizes rather than pixels?

Pixel units are relative to the resolution of the viewing device, i.e., most often a computer display. If the pixel density of the output device is very different from that of a typical computer display, the user agent should rescale pixel values. It is recommended that the reference pixel be the visual angle of one pixel on a device with a pixel density of 90dpi and a distance from the reader of an arm's length. For a nominal arm's length of 28 inches, the visual angle is therefore about 0.0227 degrees.

For reading at arm's length, 1px thus corresponds to about 0.28 mm (1/90 inch). When printed on a laser printer, meant for reading at a little less than arm's length (55 cm, 21 inches), 1px is about 0.21 mm. On a 300 dots-per-inch (dpi) printer, that may be rounded up to 3 dots (0.25 mm); on a 600 dpi printer, it can be rounded to 5 dots.

If one accepts 0.21mm per pixel, then 80 pixels would be 16.8mm - as you say, a little short of 2cm (but there is no requirements that all displays adhere to that size).

I wonder if this is related to the fact that Lo and Carolyn have not been able to view the site without it ' hanging '..I am sure they use IE.

Well, it now means that Hadrian's jumping sheep is now vanishing below the horizon when it descends (that was as yet one of the signature I had not blocked, despite being both an animation, which I often find distracting, and large).  OK, to be fair, it now has a scroll bar appear at the side of the signature, so if I really wanted to see the sheep touch down, I could scroll down to view the touchdown.

Karen's oversized signature I had already blocked, so I cannot say what effect it has had on that.

Tony,

Your signature (once you learn to count exclamation marks) is visible on my display.

If it is not visible on your display, it would imply either that you have some utility that blocks signatures, or that you have some strange configuration on your browser (maybe it has a different idea of what a pixel size it)?
