Baking powder and Vinegar!! What happens?
« on: 19/05/2007 12:14:37 »
Well, everyone knows that baking power and vinegar makes tons of gas and bubbles up and it is amazing. But what is the formula and the gas coming out?

Baking powder and Vinegar!! What happens?

Baking powder is sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and some other stuff, vinegar is mainly acetic acid (CH3COOH) in water.
Na+HCO3- + CH3COOH → CH3COO-Na++ CO2 + H2O
The resulting gas is carbon dioxide, you also get some water and some aqueous sodium acetiate.

When I have stomach acidity I sometimes drink a sodium citrate solution made from NaHCO3 and lemon juice. It's an analogous reaction.
Sodium citrate is basic, but less than NaHCO3, and has a better taste.
Now you know how to save money for Alka-Seltzer. [;)]
