In my opinon only, through having read quite a lot of stories about individual cases from news media, I'm pretty sure it does affect the outcome by a lot.

Quantity of virus contact and fatique should increase the likihood of seriousness and death, because doctors involved early on suffered serious infection and some died.

If a virus infects the throat area, that should produce a mild infection which may advance into the lungs if infected mucous is swallowed into the lungs. Older people tend to do that more thanyounger people.

In deep breathing such as doing exercises, the chance of immediate infection of the lungs can produce serious infection more likely than infection through the throat  because the body would have more time to develop anti-bodies to fight the virus.
