Are foldable-phones from Huawei and Samsung the next big thing, or big flop?
« on: 08/05/2019 09:19:25 »
Earlier today my mother linked to me a video on YouTube comparing two foldable phones soon to be released to market. As I watched this I couldn’t help but wonder if this was the best step forward for mobile innovation, or for innovation in general.

So, what do I mean? Well, thee’s a long winded and time consuming explanation I could give about how humanity’s cornerstone reason for progress is convenience, but I’ll save that for a future installment to what may or may not be a regular blog. For now, take that tidbit of an opinion based on some observation above into consideration first: Humanity’s cornerstone reason for progress is convenience.

Now, I’m of a mind that convenience isn’t a bad thing, but could be better appreciated by all. Also, the philosophy of it can be saved for later. So, being in agreement with the idea of better convenience in all things I’m all for better and more innovative tech, mobile or otherwise.

However, (and here we actually get to the meat and potatoes of the post), The foldable aspect of these devices by Huawei and Samsung, I feel, have not been applied in the most innovative way. Furthermore, I believe calling these mobile devices foldable phones is the wrong perspective.

Early reports suggest that they don't actually work very well.

Flexible displays have their uses in head-up cockpits and goggles, but the essence of a mobile phone should be sufficient rigidity to hold it in one hand and push buttons with the other. Touch screens are an abomination.

Did you read the news about the massive boycott to Huawei from US and the EU¿

US companies, from Google (Android) to ARM chip-makers, plus WiFi and BlueTooth alliances are pushing away Huawei. Today the announced a new OS, Android compatible, which will be available by the end of 2019.

Google also inhibit Huwaei to access Google Play.

Huawei faces hard times ahead, due to this techno-economic war with US.

Time will tell. I think the era of such phones has passed. It seems the Huawei  conflict is resolved with America. In any case, when choosing an application or product, you need to focus on the modern market and its conditions. It is true that Huawei sales to USA have declined, but sales in China are booming.

When there is a trade war, many people lose
- US chip sales to China have declined
- US phone manufacturers are selling less phones to China (but China seems happy to keep manufacturing them and shipping them around the world!)

The Huawei flap is interesting. The CEO of Huawei UK explained that the company is actually a workers' cooperative, owned by the trade union. This would be regarded as a Very Good Thing if it were John Lewis or a feminist publishing house, but the union subscribes to the Communist Party (as does the UK Musicians Union) and therefore supports the Chinese government, which is regarded as a Very Bad Thing.

The real worry is surely that western nations seem incapable of manufacturing secure telephone systems, nuclear power stations, or economic railways.
