Can dt Cancel?

Say we have: dx/dt = x and we want to integrate both sides to t: ∫ dx/dt dt = ∫ x dt. Now if we were allowed to cancel the dt's this would reduce to: ∫ dx = ∫ x dt so that we have: x = xt and this is not true for all x and t.
However I have seen them cancel in a paper. So can they cancel or not.
