Could there be more water in the earth than on the surface?
« on: 13/07/2021 13:15:06 »
Could there be more water in the earth than on the surface? Are the continents floating, Is there more voids in the earth than the ocean's capacity.

According to that page there is no water in rocks, but in reality, there's quite a lot.
Exactly how much is subject to debate but.

Indeed, as Bored chemist points out, there is a LOT of water in hydrated minerals.

I doubt there are many subterranean oceans (though what do I know), but if even a fraction of a percent of the mantle is "water," that could easily outweigh the glorified salty puddles on the Earth's surface.

It is generally accepted that rocks sink in water (OK; pumice...).
That's pretty much the same as saying that water floats on rock.
So underground bulk water is unstable (though it exists).
An underground "sea" would float to the surface.

I would agree with that or may be squeezed to the surface. Which in turn would mean we would sink.

I have moved this topic to the Geology board as the Question of the Week board is strictly for questions that will appear on the show.

How does one get a question that will appear on the show?

If you go to the very top of the forum you will see dropdown ‘get naked’, select ask a question. If it’s interesting it might be picked up.
