Lara wrote into the Naked Scientists to ask this question about the fascinating function of faeces.

"Is there a biological benefit for cats and dogs to bury their faeces? Can it help plants grow similar to horse manure?"

Bird poop (guano) has been used as a fertilizer for many years, as has cave deposits of bat feces.
