Old Penrose has proposed that microtubules are the seat of conciousness. However these are found even in very simple life forms which do not seem to be concious. So what are they for? Well they could just be there because they are useful structuarally and their quantum properties are just a coincidence. My idea is that the quantun properies enable the organisms to look at the consequences of different courses of action.
