When I lie on my left hand side in bed I belch but when I turn onto my right hand side I don't. This happens every night and as I prefer to sleep on my left hand side this is very annoying. Why does this happen? As Neilep would put it, come on Burpologists I need you.

Esophogeal Reflux

I have it. Your esophogus enters your stomach on the left side. There are two ways I get rid of it.

1.) sleep on right side - took a bit getting used to.
2.) sleep on a slightly inclined bed - sorry Andrew, but for reflux problems, the head must be incline up about 1.5 - 2 inches. this means the whole mattress is on a slope, not just on a pillow.

I doubt my husband will let me prop the entire mattress up so I'll have to learn to sleep on my right...blow!

Why not try lying on your back or have raised pillows or both??

I want to say lying on the left side there is a shorter section of distance for food to travel back up as reflux as it puts the food to that side and on the right side the food has further to travel to get back up into the throat so you tend to have less reflux.. same thing with  coughing sometimes and post nasel drips sleeping to the right can make a difference in airway and your cough at night!

Just a thought; that gas has to escape somehow or another, you might find that your husband would prefer you to sleep on your left.

My husband got a superking bed so that he could get as far away from my nightly emissions as possible.

You need to purchase a large foam wedge that sits under your shoulder and head area raising up only your side of the bed. your pillows go over it.. helps some when you need to be elevated...
