What are my Trusted Sites, why would webpages open them, and why should I care?

Frequently, webpages cause this security popup to appear:

Quote
Security Warning
The current webpage is trying to open a site in your Trusted Sites list. Do you want to allow this?

Inevitably this popup occurs three times (because I keep clicking "No"?).  What are the webpages trying to do, what could they do with one of my "Trusted Sites", why can't I trust my "Trusted Sites", and what are the dangers if I say yes?

Obviously, a security concern exists here.

Sounds like it's trying to redirect you to another site that you automatically have approved by using the 'defaults' installed in your browser. IExplorer?
