Are other planets warming up too?
« on: 04/02/2009 07:30:01 »
Gordon  asked the Naked Scientists:

I have read, a couple of times, that planets other than the Earth are warming up. Is there any truth in this.

If it is true why are we being 'blamed' for Earth's warming?

I know Venus has been warming up. Same process as on Earth, global warming. But it's a more natural process there.

We're blamed because that way it suits some particular types of people.

Because that's where the evidence points.  Warming can be caused by a number of factors, so it's fallacious to conclude that warming on some other planet must have the same cause as warming on earth.

It is a pretty good clue when you know that all the warming systems are warmed by the same giant. It also helps when you understand that hundreds of billions of dollars are up for grabs by alarming citizens and convincing them to give their money to the experts who claim they can fix the problem.

Edit: I can report that our new president fell for it; and US citizens are now out $150,000,000,000. You have to use a B to say that number.

Hey Vern I read the other day that climate change is irreversible. So what are we throwing money at it for?. Only an idiot throws money at something that can't be fixed.
The sun you say heats the earth. No that can't be right we all know that it is CO2. [;D]

Cheers

The main thing I fear is our track record of getting things wrong the first few tries. So we spend 150B and make it worse by 150B worth. Now we have to take 300B for the next try; that may also fail.

Well, Venus is a lovely idea:)
    Well shaped and inviting, but.

Venus atmosphere is "a large mass of CO2 – roughly 97 percent.
If you like a deeper look at that same phenomena.
    http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2006/04/lessons-from-venus/langswitch_lang/in

That doesn't mean that we, if having the same atmosphere, would have the same exact 'heat index' though.
Solar warming has in fact failed as an 'alternative' explanation for our 'global warming'.

I gave this one as a recent example :)

It's not that scientific perhaps, but it summarize some graphs beautifully to prove that even though cyclic sunspots have an impact they are not enough to explain the warming we have.
You should also recognize that this guy tries to be 'middle of the road' here :)

    I'm not.

    I take it seriously.

Going back to the original question.

Assuming that it follows the behavout of atandard sun-like main sequence stars, the sun itself is slowly getting brighter and emitting more energy as it ages.  Currently this is a very slow and no signoficant changes will take place over the next one thousand million years.  This process is far to slow to see changes in effects.  It follows that the planets are slowly warming up.

Most planets and their satellites are also subject to seasomal changes for example Pluto is very close to the sun at the moment
