Nice eh ?..Being delivered next Tuesday.

Now I happen to be one of those people who can handle this when some chalk screeches across a blackboard or cutlery scraping on a plate....my particular aversion (and it is VERY VERY strong) is when a needle goes across an LP or when ewe scratch some material that has akin to the grooves of a record (do ewe know what I mean ?) ..just thinking about it makes my spine tingle !

WHY does this have an effect on us like that ?..why does screeching make us cringe ?..send shivers down your spine ?

WHY ?

thank ewe for your kind consideration in this matter.

hugs & shmishes

mwah mwah mwah

Screeching scratches on a chalk board does not bother me in the slightest.....
I can however elate to the ripping noise on a LP..
Its an aweful cringe because...I know my album has just more then likely been damaged....

That and acid rock ....

Forget all that "it sounds like a distressed monkey" stuff, it's a resonance effect ...

Quote
So why do sounds with frequencies between 1-2 kHz cause the effect? My guess is that the effect is produced by activation of various myogenic reflex responses including the stapedius response, the post-auricular response and responses of other muscles innervated by the facial nerve (and possibly the trigeminal nerve). It so happens that the tuning curves of stapedius motorneurons have their best frequencies between 1-2 kHz with a threshold of about 75 dB in the cat (see Kobler et al. (1992), J. Neurophysiol. 68, 807-817).
