Where's the health warning?
« on: 17/12/2008 08:53:32 »
Look, here is a packet of cigarettes, sugar and salt, a tub of lard some bottles of booze, a knife, a gun and a car. They have something in common. They pose a serious threat to the health of those who use them and/or to others around them. So why is it that only the cigarette packet carries a health warning?

They say that cigarettes are the only things that you can die from if you follow the instructions.

Alcohol health warnings by 2008

The new labels should be introduced by the end of 2008
Alcoholic drinks will carry new health warning labels by the end of 2008 under a voluntary agreement between ministers and the drinks industry.
The labels will detail alcoholic units and recommended safe drinking levels.

Bottles and cans currently have alcohol percentages, but only some state what this equals in alcoholic units.

Public health minister Caroline Flint says exactly what the labels will say is not decided, but the warnings will not be as strong as for cigarettes.

What about incorporating a drunkenness test on alcohol labels by exploiting the beer-goggle effect:
print photos of very ugly people on the label with the warning “if you find any of these persons attractive then you are drunk”.   [:)]

Taking anything in excess will kill you, I mean, heack, even drinking too much water can kill you, so should they have warning labels "Do not consume excess water"? Or pictures of people with bloated stomachs filled with water?
Perhaps they should just put health warnings on everything that can be consumed...

I've never seen instructions on a packet of fags, but this explains it perfectly http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Dsc2nQ3BCZA&feature=related

I liked the Blackadder quip about smoking when Raleigh brought tobacco back for Queenie. It was words to the effect of "Roll up a bit of weed, stuff it in your mouth, and set fire to it"  [:D]

And there's Bob Newhart's "Phone call to 'Nutty Walt' Walter Raleigh"
"What do you do now, Walt?    You light it?"

When in France recently I saw a rather curious symbol on bottles of wine/beer than was evidently meant to mean "don't drink when pregnant"...
