Is there a remedy for the effects of chilli?
« on: 12/06/2009 19:30:03 »
Brian Mihura  asked the Naked Scientists:

Greetings Naked Scientists!

I know that Dr. Chris is a fan of the chilli, a thing he has in common with many of us here in Texas.

While I relish the piquant sensation as I consume this delicacy, I dread the experience of that same sensation arising elsewhere the next day.

I am certainly open to acquiring new sensory capabilities but that is the very last organ on my body that I wish to train to be able to taste.  The remedy for cooling the mouth are legion, but what about the latter?

Thanks

Brian Mihura

I remember in one kitchen science Dave (or was it Ben?) tried a mint with some chilli and said it tasted good!

Just eat lots over a long period, the nerves will eventually desensitise.

Another thing you could try is olestra potato crisps with the curry. The capsicum is fat soluble and the olestra is not absorbed, so the olestra should soak it up and carry it through with less problems.
