Could agents that boost immunity cause autoimmune disease?
« on: 01/11/2009 08:22:13 »
Allergic reaction is basically an overreaction of the immune system. Sometimes it can even kill. I wonder if these "immune boosters", if they work at all, could increase your chance of allergic reaction or the intensity of an allergic reaction. Also can it increase the chance of auto-immune disorders?

[MOD EDIT - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PHRASE YOUR THREAD TITLES AS QUESTIONS SO THAT I DON'T HAVE TO KEEP ALTERING THEM! THANKS. CHRIS]

Depends on the working mechanism of the immune booster.
More info is needed to answer your question

In immunology, an adjuvant is an agent that may stimulate the immune system and increase the response to a vaccine ... Oil-water suspensions have been reported to increase the risk of autoimmune disease: ... caution should be exercised in the use of oil adjuvants in human and veterinary vaccines. ... their use may be complicated by autoimmunity. Also, a risk for Rheumatoid arthritis has been reported
