Dark Flames - Garage Science
« on: 20/03/2013 18:07:36 »
It sounds like something out of a horror film, but this is a lovely experiment which makes a bright orange flame seem dark, and has lead to scientists finding out the composition of stars on the other side of the universe.

 Read more about this experiment.

Garage science is a blog of science experiments you probably can't or shouldn't do at home

Those energy wave diagrams look a lot like what you get when you spin fluids in a bucket at high speeds. Different speeds form different shapes in the water. You get triangles, squares, ovals and maybe other shapes. Just thought I'd point that out.

That is not an effect I was aware of. but I think they are probably related effects, you get some form of circular standing wave in the bucket, in a similar way to a circular standing wave around the nucleus.
