I went fossil hunting with my son and a friend yesterday.  We found about 200 shark teeth, several bones and this item we are not able to identify.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

Here is another picture of it.  Looks like growth rings on it, but they are actually under another layer that is somewhat worn off.

An orthocone can be thought of as like a Nautilus  shell, but with the shell straight and uncoiled. It was previously believed that these represented the most primitive form of nautiloid, but it is now known that the earliest nautiloids had shells that were slightly curved.

I think RD is probably correct. It does look significantly like a nautiloid.

I have asked frethack to look at this when he gets though with his exam today or tomorrow. It is almost the end of the semester.
