Mobile phones were around before 1973...

Teppo Maenpaa asked the Naked Scientists:
Dear Chris,
Your recent podcast claimed an anniversary of the first mobile phone call,
placed in NY in 1973.

I was curious to learn that have you checked the year ? In Finland the first mobile phone network was opened to public in 1971, and I am rather sure that it had customers before April 1973. Accoring to Wikipedia, there would have been mobile phone networks in Sweden even earlier. I have no first-hand experience of those networks, though.
In the end this might be a question of what qualifies as a "mobile phone
call". To further complicate this issue, another quote directly from the
internet:
http://www.ehow.com/about_5426865_history-car-phones.html
I have no idea whether these stories are true.
Best regards,
Teppo Mäenpää

Hi Teppo,
Thanks for your comments, and your research! We should have been a bit more specific on the show - the 1973 call was the first public call made on a hand held mobile phone, but you're quite right - the car phone had been making calls on the move for several years before then!
