Would the super-nova from this star affect earth? " The monster Eta Carinae located about 8,000 light years from here. Eta Carinae was probably formed less than 3 million years ago. It consumes fuel so fast in its core that it gives off 4 million times the energy of the Sun. Astronomers think that Eta Carinae has less than 100,000 years to live. In fact, it could detonate as a supernova any day now…"

The concerns about nearby supernovas mostly focus on supernovae within 50 light-years of the Earth.
- Eta Carinae, at 8000 light-years is 160 times farther away.
- Because intensity drops as the square of distance, Eta Carinae will be around 25,000 times dimmer than a "risky" supernova at 50 light-years.
