How safe is sitting in a hot tub?
« on: 26/08/2020 14:31:44 »
Jon asks:

Suppose two people decide to sit in a hot tub together, with the jets roaring. They are sitting in a sea of chlorinated water droplets. How safe are they?

Can you help?

Very. Unlikely they will both drown (although it depends what they are doing), Always good to bathe with a buddy  :)

This was my question, and it was aimed at COVID safety, not drowning...

As safe as the clorine over any other close quaters encounter. Hot tubs though are full of human fat and other bodily excretions. Imagine a bathtub that you do not empty that is kept at body temperature without the chlorine that numbers of people frequent.

For Covid safety in this situation the main risk is airborne transmission. Sitting side by side and wearing a mask would be good precautions. If you have concerns over contact transmissions using some kind of soap in the water should reduce virus lifetime significantly.

PS yes the risk of drowning in a bathtub is very low for adults, but much greater for children under 5.

If you are sharing the tub with your family/ household, the additional risk is probably small.

How hot is the hot tub?

Male testes are outside the body to keep their temperature below 37C.

A hot tub over 37C would not be good for male fertility, regardless of what it does for his libido...
