A pitbull mix attacked me a few weeks ago and the cuts on my arms are now just scars.

The statement is elliptical. Wounds don't heal instantly. Collagen heals wounds but it takes time.

Apropos non-physical wounds, which is what the proverb really means: My father told me a story of a Jewish doctor treating a dying man with an SS tattoo. The patient asked if the doctor could ever forgive and forget. He said "Humans forget, but only a god can forgive. Mine doesn't."
