Why does earwax smell the way it does?

Jeff would like help finding answers to this question.

"Earwax has a distinctive odor - I wear hearing aids and get the smell whenever I remove them.  Does all human earwax smell the same? Or does the smell vary from person to person, like body odor?  What gives earwax its distinctive smell, so different from beeswax or candle wax?"
