Rage quitting is the latest trend
« on: 20/02/2022 15:44:18 »
You guys in academia probably don't deal with them often, but at my job at the National Archives a coworker who I thought was right in the head, rage quitted because the bananas and apples in our commissary keep going bad and are not replaced often enough.
I don't know what the laws are in the UK, but in the US quitting without giving proper notice disqualifies one from receiving unemployment benefits. It also prevents them from receiving a positive reference. Of course, there are some exceptions. For example, if someone rage quits because someone in their company murdered their mother or raped them and no measures to investigate are implemented, the state and future employers will most likely understand that.

AFAIK you can walk out at any time but doing so voluntarily disqualifies you from benefits, and doing so without notice can forfeit some wages.

There are nevertheless many cases of "last straw" quitting when management gets petty about paper towels or not allowing a toaster in the staff room* but there's usually a background of chronic incompetence and injustice.

*on health and safety grounds, of course. The fact that my brother's canteen is losing money is irrelevant,
