I want to know!

What is organic food? From where can we buy organic products? Actually, I’m suffering from health problems and my family doctor has suggested me to take only organic food. So I want to know more about organic food and their recipes. Please let me know if you have any information. Thanks.

Hi There,

Welcome here.

Where do you live in the world ?

Here in he UK Organic food is widely available in any supermarket...here's some info I copied and pasted from Wikipedia for you

Organic food

Organic foods are produced according to certain production standards. For crops, it means they were grown without the use of conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers, human waste, or sewage sludge, and that they were processed without ionizing radiation or food additives.[1] For animals, it means they were reared without the routine use of antibiotics and without the use of growth hormones. In most countries, organic produce must not be genetically modified.

...and here's the link to the rest of the article

If you then scroll down you'll find lots of further references and links for you.

Standarts of just what 'organic' means in different countries varies tremendously. If you want to get right to the bottom of it Ashley, then I strongly suggest you do some searching with keywords such as e.g. organic food standarts and see what you can come up with.

For the UK, to supplement what Neil already mentioned you can find:
UK register of organic food standarts a pdf file; DEFRA ~ UKROFS standarts pre 2003 but still relevant
also: Advisory Committee on Organic Standards (ACOS) and more links from there.

As to recipes: there is no difference on how you cook e.g. organic potatos versus normal potatos. Healthy cooking methods are of course always better than e.g. deep frying and some people even go raw all the way (which btw your body needs time to acclimatize to so if you're planning to go raw a lot, then do the switch slowly)

 [:)] hope that helps

Farmers markets are great ways to get organics ... co-ops etc.. Humboldt county here it is easy to get organics because we are a very health conscious county as far as organics etc. You can always buy stuff from the store but even the big box store here purchase a lot from local farmers for their organic supplies. Now you can of cource do some box gardening and pretty much grow enough for your self for the the whole year round as far as the produce is concerned!

Welcome to the forum Ashley and Barby!
