I believe its just a small electric motor that spins a small unbalanced weight around

Hmm, I have not seen one like that. They are usually smaller and and flatter so they are mounted on a pcb without too much height. The motor drives an eccentically weighted disc.

if any of you have an old ps2 pad open it and you see them turning things that make it vibrate, you can take them out and put it back in again without it braking aswell. My mate had a green pad and we swapped it so we had pads half green and half black lol, the pad still works too lol

Surely, it's something like an electric calling bell in the way that it works and not so much like a motor?

Sometimes a concept is baffling not because it is profound but because it is wrong.?

No - an eccentric weight on a motor is far more efficient - transferring a rotation of a small motor to a linear reciprocation  is better than using a huge solenoid. For a start, the spectrum of the vibration using a rotation is largely the one frequency you want.
