The guys who built the bomb were not doing so with Japan in mind as a target.
What the military did with the bomb is their moral issue, not that of the scientists.

If I remember right there were some scientists that refused to have anything to do with building them, no matter what the target would be. But I also state that it is very hard to lift yourself out of the current way of 'thinking', or mold. We are flock animals after all and our safety lies in conformity. That's why we have coined the name 'whistle blower' for those un-conforming ones, not that we might enjoy them as much if we are the ones conforming.

And to me the question of 'souls' do have a religious overtone?
