Why is P silent?

JimBob was arguing with me the other day. We were talking about our pal Pneumatic Norma, and he said I was mispronouncing her name.

"The P is silent, as in Bath", he said.

Obviously, there is no "P" in Bath, but as he's probably a bit confused on account of all the harmaceuticals they've been giving him recently, I thought it best to let it go.

Sometimes we pronounce the p - apnoea - even though its from the same root.  I don't think anyone drops the p there.

Pee-ing in the bath silent - Maybe that's what he was thinking of [:D]

We have a sign in our leisure centre saying "Swimming ool, please note there is no p in it, let's keep it that way!"

Look mom a Baby Ruth!
