Does baldness really occur in old age?

I know we are constantly fed the myth that baldness occurs in old age, but I wonder if that was based on a time when human life expectancy was not as long as it now is. My dad went bald when he was 7, whereas I have got to 50 & still have a full head of hair. I have noticed most people seem to go bald in their twenties, unless they are much older than they look (some I can definately say this about), and I reckon that if you have made it to 40 and still have hair, you are unlikely to lose it. What do you think?
