taking up (suffering) surfing LOL
« on: 14/02/2007 13:13:38 »
I was thinking of taking up suffering surfing this summer. I have seen it taking place on the north east cost of Ireland.

What sort of gear would I need as beginner, can anyone tell me?

Also is there any exercises or routines I can do before I start?

First, you need a hair shirt, the more coarse the better. Then a few flails with iron in-sets to really cut your flesh. Be sure to get wet and roll in salt naked before applying flails. Get into the mind set that you are a worm and do not deserve anything from the world or other people. Beat yourself bloody.

Then go home to a dysfunctional family and let them abuse you for the rest of your life, first tending your wounds, then telling you what a looser you are, especially if they can keep it up 24 hrs. a day.

You'll suffer then. For a warm-up, go to the most fundamental and strict church you can think of. One where they channel John Calvin's ghost would be ideal.

I can work only with what I am given to work with, Hadrian. Sigh, I though I was helping.

when i saw the line:

I assumed it was a political statement, and stayed well clear. LOL

Lessons  [;)]

I had a surf lesson while I was on holiday in St Ives (Cornwall). They gave us these big foam boards, probably because we were all beginners  [;)] But still a lot of fun, I stood up once before falling off. I'm more into body boarding though  [:)]

Otherwise all you really need is a wet suit and a board as they are the basic equipment you need. Generally you can hire all the gear on most beaches anyway. Hiring gear is probably the best idea for the first time, and when you feel that it is something you would like to continue doing then you could buy your own.

Irish Monks did this - so - Irish? Catholic penance? It has happened.

Should I judge another's belief system and "still have a beam in my own eye?"

It is not for me to interfere, is it?

Correct me if I am wrong, please.

Excellent idea - warmth and possible bouncy if it is a water sealed wet suit as is used in very cold waters.

Be sure the waters you surf in are highly infested with hungry, man-eating sharks. Then it could be St. Hadrian sometime in the future. Your feast day would be a day when all kneeling rails were covered with ground glass. Than the communion wine would be wine vinegar. The feast would be rancid food, etc, etc.

I do hate to bring up this subject but to be a saint you will need to give up sheep and make women friends.
