Why are brushless DC motors not used more widely?
« on: 12/10/2017 08:45:18 »
Hello All,

I was going through <<MOD EDIT: Commercial link irrelevant to question has been removed >> I came across BLDC motors.

I read that they are super efficient, produce more torque per watt, more power and also last longer. If they have so many advantages, why are we not using it everywhere ?

What are their disadvantages?

Cheers.

Cost, power and complexity. These are all improving but if you just want something that goes, stops and reverses, the brush technology is cheap as chips, available in pretty much any size you want, and can be repaired by a man with a hammer.

If all you have is a hammer everything looks like Jimmy Nail.

If you want to put one in a satellite best use a brushless one even then the ones in weather satellites fail

They are becoming more common in cordless power tools. My guess is they are generally more expensive to make.
