Could we exist anywhere in the galaxy?
« on: 13/07/2021 20:10:28 »
Could we exist anywhere in the galaxy? We are very fortunate to live on this earth as we are governed by a multitude of coincidences. I will list some and maybe you can add some more we live under a single sun, the sun is the correct temperature, we are at the correct distance from the sun, we have the moon, we have the ocean tides, the earth has its tilt, we have our seasons, we have water, we have oxygen, we have precipitation, we have vegetation, we have craters, The list can go on and on I think if any of these things were removed or in some cases just altered we would cease to exist. we live in a house of cards please don't pull a card out.

Yes but we do not use copper in our blood, are not made from silicon and do not breathe nitrogen.

We will have to be careful if we move then.

Could we exist elsewhere in the galaxy? Probably, if you use a fairly broad definition of "we". It wouldn't surprise me if organic life once evolved on Mars.

Could we exist anywhere in the galaxy? No.

I appreciate your opinion but I don't believe we could be anywhere else as life is very special only to this planet that of course is a matter of opinion.

Hi.

Could we exist anywhere in the galaxy?  How much technology are we allowed to bring with us?
Some human beings do exist (for quite a long time) on the International Space Station.   Very long term exposure to these conditions will start to have detrimental effects but it's not difficult to imagine that as our technology improves we can build better space stations where human beings can remain for arbitrarily long periods of time.

Thanks for your reply my post title is a bit incomplete sorry I was thinking more about what the likelihood was for a planet elsewhere in the galaxy that might have all that is necessary for life similar to the one we have. What you stated is very interesting and I won't put my hand up to travel for any distance or time in a tin can anyway I would not want to be anywhere near the launch pad.

Hence the importance of defining "we". It seems that bacteria and lichens could thrive on Mars without terraforming. Once you have established something capable  of manufacturing carbohydrates and proteins from sunlight, CO2 and H2O, you could introduce all sorts of anaerobic predators.

It is possible that some type of fish or other aquatic species is below the ice on mars and if so then that would open the door for life throw out the universe but until they find life on another planet my bet is we are all alone.

Am I wrong or did you just ask if we could exist in the black hole at the center of our galaxy?

I think that the answer is clear to most people

Actually the human body needs copper, nitrogen and silicon.  Silicon is in the skin, copper is essential for nerves and nitrogen carries Oxygen in red blood cells.  And by the way you are breathing Nitrogen now
