Yes I am in the middle of the redwoods.. They are all around. used to be until a a month or two ago outside of my house on the property next to me but they have cut them down! There are still lots here just not in me back yard anymore.. SAD!!  We have tons of them here!

They are interesting trees You cut them down and they grow again right out of the stumps.. The trees that fall in a storm and lie on the forest floor also start shooting up new trees right over the  logs they are incredible trees that have survived for for thousands of years! New starts emerge from the fallen tree! I have a picture somewhere of a fallen one which has grown over again!

Wow..When I'm living by myself or with a girl I'll have to go over there and check them trees out! That's different!

This is called "coppicing". It's actually quite rare in conifers - I think there are only 3 conifer species that re-grow like this. There are many broadleaves that do this like willow for example. This is why it is being used for biomass production, as it saves re-planting costs and a coppice "stool" (the part that stay after cutting) has a large root, so grows very quickly. Coppicing goes back a long way in history, and was used for many building materials, as well as for charcoal production.
