what does it take to become a scientist

it is my goal to becoem the best damn ecologist i can muster after i get my degrees. Im getting my classes done as we speak, but i need to know ahead of time what i should do once i get out of the gate. how do i actually start being a profession paid scientist? If there are any ecologists, how do i start getting paid for that. Im not in it for the money, but ill need it for my mundane life and to support my someday-soon wife, and of course so i can keep learning about the world around me, so i would very much like at least some advice on maximizing the finacial potential of my life's work, so it doesnt turn into a dream that should not come true becuase it doesnt support me and mine. And this can help everyone here that wants to be a scientist someday. Advice would be VERRRYY much apprciated. Thank you.

Shop around get a grant from some research: board, council, or independent centre and go do some research. [
] Do a PhD and you get into that world through academia, which would be simpler… and you will probably need a PhD to prove that you aren’t gunna be researching nonsense. Then write some cool papers, go through peer review and get famous! maybe not rich [
] At least that’s how I think it works… I’m just an undergrad student, but I am working in a Marine Research Lab. at the moment working on “Remote Sensing Data Analysis” using satellites and cool things like that. So all the people I support and work for are all Doctors writing papers and giving seminars. In fact I get to go to seminars too which is pretty cool, because I get to see how all the stuff I do is used.
I'm the new guy at the moment though, so I'm only doing website and database stuff.

Could always come to the place I'm at if you want to do marine ecology, we have lots of people from other countries.

Tronix,
The best advice for actually getting paid is to become a very good grant writer. Applying for grants can be an....interesting...process. [:p] You have to know how to make your idea sound good and prove that your research is going to be helpful either to mankind or whoever is providing the grant. Get with some of your profs on this, they should know ALL about it [
].
Finding a firm is also good, sometimes...you might find yourself cubby-holed, so be prepared for that. I know here in Las Vegas, for instance, Desert Research Institute is a good place for ecologists, and they keep a good open dialogue with the University folks.
I like to lick rocks....

you could look on ecologist job sites to get an idea of whats out there, they'll have the qualifications needed on the job ad so you can see what to work for. here's one:

Part of it is publishing, and presenting papers. Part of it is an undying curosity that causes you to study and research your field until you are one of the best (instead of researching elbow bending at the local bar). And part of it is luck and seeing oppertunity where everyone else sees thankless work.
Got to get back to my thankless work and my field of expertise: Thermal analysis of Iron and Aluminum.

I recommend getting as much experience as possible while in college, even if it means working for no pay. ANY job experience will be a huge boost in getting a job.
