    Fortunately, we have a very bright star a mere 150 million km away, which provides enough light to keep plants, solar cells and sunbathers happy (at least in the summer months).

    solar cells would be the last thing I would worry about , the first thing is plants, there would not be food.

    That would depend upon the reason why light could not get to the earth.
