does anyone study tornados from above?

i was flying across country the other day and looking at the clouds and a question popped into my head...
has anyone done any research from ABOVE a tornado? i dont know if there would be much benifit from it but im curious if you would be able to see the tornado from directly above, and see all the way down to the ground? or if this type of study is even possible. i know there are many tornado chasers who study them from the ground, but i think arial scientific research on tornados would be interesting...

mmmm yes i know that many people study hurricanes and there are even planes that fly directly into the eye of a hurricane from the sides ... but what would a tornado look like from above?

Hurricanes, tornadoes and water going down the plug-hole (below) are the same vortex phenomena,
just at different scales.

So, is it true that the eye of the storm is calm?
