Do bacteria sleep, or have a pattern to their activity?

therodgers21  asked the Naked Scientists:
Hi,

I’m a new fan of your show.  I live in Silicon Valley (it sounds far more noble than Milpitas, [Mill peat ass] no?).  I find your show to be the best way to demystify science.  You offer a simple enough introduction to make the subject’s specifics understandable.

Listening to a bright lady with a sexy voice doesn’t hurt either.

My question: do all living things require rest?  Case in point: do bacteria sleep or have a pattern to their activity?

  Thanks,

  Bruce Rodgers

Photosynthetic bacteria are governed by sunlight exposure, so would behave differently in the day and in the night.
