Do we all see colours the same way?
« on: 28/04/2009 19:30:02 »
Jennifer Adcock  asked the Naked Scientists:
   Hi Dr Chris,

Love your newbielink:http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/ [nonactive], only just discovered it in Jan this year when downloading newbielink:http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/ [nonactive] to take first to South Africa and then to Egypt where I listened to most of last year's and all newbielink:http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/ [nonactive].

Now back here in West Berkshire and listening live for the first time, hoorah!

Want to know about colour. I'm an artist and fascinated to know if we all see colour in the same way. I hear that some animals have a tonal reaction rather than all the bright colours that we see. We only know what we have been taught but do you see blue as the colour that I it or do you see blue as I see red?

Hope the programme will go on and on!

Jenny

Some people (usually males) are colour blind: they cannot detect some (or rarely all) colours.

By microscopic examination of the light-sensitive part of the eye (retina) it is possible to tell that some animals cannot see colour, and other animals (e.g. birds) have better colour vision than humans.
