How do you get the smell of faeces off shoes?

Ashleigh asked the Naked Scientists:
How do I remove the smell of faeces (dog sh1t) from the bottom of my shoe; the smell has been there for 6 months and I can't get rid of it?
What do you think?

Sometimes scrubbing the shoe in the sink helps. For me, just wearing it for a couple of days, and I can't tell it is there anymore.
Have you been wearing the shoes for 6 months and can still smell it? Or, have they been sitting in the closet?
If you've been wearing them, then you either have an extremely sensitive sense of smell, or you think that you are smelling something that isn't actually there. I find it unlikely that other people are being affected by the smell.

I buy cheap shoes, and only one pair each of brown and black. That way I don't feel so bad when they get torn or stained or start leaking water, and I have to replace them immediately because I don't have any others. Really cheap shoes, having a synthetic upper welded to a rubber sole, are pretty well waterproof so you can remove dog poo with a pressure hose, without even taking them off.
