Does anyone know where the stick of rock you buy at seaside towns originates from, and why it became such a tradition?

Are you talking about the cylindrical candy?  I had some while visiting Arundel Castle almost 35 years ago.  Mine was pink on the outside and white on the inside with some printing embedded.  Wasn't it called Liverpool rock, or something like that?  Funny what we remember.
