Ok...I gather my thumb is a finger !!

but why is it ? amongst my twenty digits, that the thumb is rewarded with it's own nomenclature ?..ie: The Thumb !!

According to Ontario's Workplace Safety Act, the thumb is not a finger. I believe it says that losing a finger is not life threatning but losing a thumb equates to losing your hand. So if you need workers comp, you get more for a thumb

In italian:
Pollice = thumb   then we have: Indice, Medio, Anulare & Mignolo
Alluce  = big toe
...so that's not a problem!

(Merluzzo = Cod)

thumbs are jointed differently to fingers. i don't know big toes aren't though, they seem to have a similar joint structure, but don't move around as much. unles.... what about monkey feet? can't they hold things with their feet like we can with our hands? maybe its all evolutionary?

Big thumbs up for evolution...

This looping branch (in red) is clearly adaptation, not an "intelligent design".

thumbs and fingers are all digits, but the thumb is the opposable[sp?] digit, ie. the 'odd one out', so naturally it gets singled out
