There may be several reasons.  For those religions that require celibate priests, it may drive their sexual tendencies into the closet. 

And, of course, altar boys have been,,,,  well boys.  So, it gave the priests different access to young boys than young girls,although that may be changing.

I am not sure but serial killers are also far more likely to have a homosexual bent. Whether that was because homosexuality was deriled and a crime and therefore was some sort of reaction to suppression remains to be seen.
