Anyone believe Oliver Cromwell's rebellion was justified?
« on: 18/03/2021 04:54:30 »
In any of your opinion, did Cromwell have a legitimate beef against the Stewart king?
I think any king or leader that runs primarily based on his own conscience and doesn't pay much attention to consul and their people, meet the definition of despotism. I also believe it's beyond evil to see yourself as God's chosen. Both Cromwell and Charles I saw themselves as such.

"The last temptation is the greatest treason
To do the right thing for the wrong reason"

Establishing the authority of Parliament was a Good Thing, but conflating democracy with religious intolerance was a bad reason for many of his actions.

At the time, they would not have recognised a difference between " The Right Thing" and "The Will of God".
The phrases would have been considered equivalent.

So they would have considered that doing something "For the Glory of God" would have been the "Right Reason".

Except that the King ruled by God's decree, as did the Pope, and Cromwell, and indeed everyone with a big enough army.

And there was always a remarkable agreement between " what I want" and "What God wants".

Wasn't the problem, in the 17th century, just this:

A peaceful, wise, and well-meaning King Charles, got confronted by a brutal and aggressive Cromwell.

Who wanted to unseat Charles, and get on the throne himself.

Given that the whole world has followed suit from feudal Monarchy to postmodern societies, you would have to say yes.

If you are on about the king loosing his head, charles was defeated once in the commons and once on the battlefield with thousands of lives lost and still was allowed to remain as king, but for a second time took up arms against the people, that is why he lost his head.

Oliver Cromwell was in the same category as Napoleon, Churchill, Hitler and Stalin. All of them bloodthirsty warmongers.  They brought nothing but wars.

Thank goodness they're gone.  Now we have nicer leaders like Boris and Joe Biden.  They're not feared even by a child.

Just to clarify, what kicked it all off was Charles wanting money to fund feudal wars in France (protestants catholics again) and parliament saying no. Charles raised war once and was forgiven, but did it once more. The civil war is the bloodiest in British history. For doing it twice I think he deserved to loose his head, just like hitler. He probably deserved a lot more and got off lightly by medieval standards.

The only thing about Cromwell that really disappoints me is Ireland, such a bloody conflict.  The Irish ended up supporting an English King and thus we have the outflow of history .

A peaceful, wise, and well-meaning King Charles,
Not sure where you ‘learnt’ your history. I have to agree with @Petrochemicals - part of his reign wasn’t called 11yrs of tyranny for nothing.

Is that what he did establish the authority of parliament? He ruled as lord protector, an effective dictator in self created theocracy.

Cromwell was more a tool of the merchants, that's what the war really marked the movement from feudalism to capitalism.

This is not a jokes thread. The people you mentioned are simply tools of the system, their advisers have more power then them. West is run by oligarchy and always has been. Well certianly since Cromwell anyway. You should read the prince by machiavelli, it's an interesting read.

Cromwell had his reasons they differed from his accomplices like Wessex who wanted to reform the Monarchy.
If it wasnt Cromwell it would have been someone else, revolutions are unavoidable sometimes, the only thing that can be controllable is how they occur and how bad they are.

Is one greedy, murderous sociopath better than another? Does that matter in the end?

Hitler was very kind to children and animals, except for the children he called animals.
